Abstract

The role of debt collectors in Indonesia is marred by controversy due to their aggressive debt collection methods, which often involve threats, intimidation and violence. Despite legal regulations, debt collectors have been known to use coercive tactics to ensure repayment of debtors, thereby violating their rights to comfort, safety and security. This study highlights the legal aspects of debt collection practices in Indonesia, focusing on the role of debt collectors and the legal regulations governing their activities. The findings indicate that while regulations exist, they are insufficient to fully protect consumer rights, and that more effective regulations and stricter law enforcement are needed to ensure that debt collectors operate within the bounds of the law.
