Abstract

Abstract: The development of a rear bumper made from S45C hollow steel for an electric vehicle designed by Mechanical Engineering students is directed toward creating a multifunctional vehicle. One of the key components in this electric vehicle development is the rear bumper. So far, the product design has varied and has not fully matched the functional requirements of the vehicle component. In the future, it is expected that this electric vehicle can be produced on a mass scale. Therefore, a proper design and fabrication process for the rear bumper that meets technical standards is required. This component is designed using S45C hollow steel, a medium-carbon steel classified as machinery steel, commonly used in components such as gears, couplings, pulleys, axles, pistons, railway rails, and structural steel. This study involves a heat treatment process in the form of welding on S45C hollow steel to improve its mechanical properties. The welding process is also carried out to achieve optimal aerodynamic, ergonomic, and aesthetic aspects. Bending and Rockwell hardness tests were conducted to verify the improvement in material quality after heat treatment. The test results show that the hardness value of the specimen after welding (second test) reached 45.1 HRC, with an average of 43.03 HRC and a standard deviation of 2.126. Meanwhile, the lowest hardness value obtained in the first test before welding was 36 HRC.
