Abstract

There have been failures in the cylinder block of a vehicle, a failure that occurs in the form of crack on the surface. Cylinder block is a major part of the engine that is created through the process of casting. The purpose of this research is to determine the root cause and mechanism of failure that results in broken cylinder block and provide solutions so that similar failures can be avoided. In this study conducted a few tests on the cylinder block components that have failed include visual observation, metallographic and chemical composition analysis on specific areas using SEM / EDS. The test results indicate that the cylinder block material is pearlitic gray cast iron HFCLAI standard with the value of carbon equivalent (CE) 4.08%. The presence of porosity, inclusions, and cracks crack propagation micro provide opportunities for component machining is done workmanship. The formation of dendritic structures made of cast iron is more brittle, resulting in easy cracking component during the machining process. This means that the manufacture of components cyilinder block without passing through the heat treatment procedure. The process of making better use of induction furnace so that the melt surface area so as to facilitate the use of slag remover repeatedly on the surface of the molten iron so with the goal of minimizing the formation of inclusion.
