Abstract

This study aims at analyzing Dutch language teaching materials entitled Help!
Een Cursus Nederlands voor Anderstaligen by Ham et al based on Mackey‘s
theory of standards for the assessment of good teaching materials. The standard of
assessment is conducted by selection, gradation, presentation and repetition. After
analyzing materials based on four stages of Mackey‘s theory, it tries to describe
the aspects of the advantages and disadvantages of the book. As a result, the
contents of this book are very good to be used as teaching materials. This is
because in terms of material selection, gradations of material presentation, its
creative presentation methods and in relating to the exercices, it can help Dutch
language learners to have four language skills. The shortcomings of this book can be seen in the following points: first, it is presented in Dutch language because when learning it there should have needs to be guidance from the tutor. For people who firstly study Dutch language and directly use this book as learning material, they will find it difficult with the newly known vocabulary and structures. Second, this book – although claiming to use a range of 2000 vocabularies that are most commonly used in Dutch- does not have a vocabulary list in the appendix so that it will be difficult for learners who are new to Dutch. In terms of exercices, at the end of this book no answers were presented and from this it seemed that this book involved more tutors to explain than the learner‘s creativity.
Keywords:selection, gradation, presentation and repetition, Mackey‘s theory.
