Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims to synthesize and map the convergence and divergence of the effects of leverage and firm size on tax avoidance. The conflict of fiscal interests and the flexibility of the self-assessment system backdrops this aggressive tax phenomenon. The research method used is descriptive qualitative through a literature review approach of 3 primary reference journals. The results indicate inconsistencies among the literatures. The leverage variable consistently has a positive effect on tax avoidance due to the utilization of debt interest expenses as a deductible expense. Conversely, firm size shows divergent results; some journals found a positive effect due to the financial capability to exploit legal loopholes, while others detected a negative effect due to the tendency of large companies to maintain public reputation under strict oversight from fiscal authorities. In conclusion, leverage and firm size are critical determinants, yet the direction of their impact highly depends on internal corporate governance.
