Abstract

This study aims to analyze the equivalence and shift in lexical meaning between the terms al-Mar’ah (المرأة) and an-Nisaa’ (النساء) in contemporary fatwa articles published by Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah. Although both words are often translated equally into Indonesian as "woman" or "female," they have fundamentally different lexical characteristics, morphological structures, and semantic implications. Using a descriptive qualitative method with a contrastive analysis and lexical semantics approach, data in the form of religious texts and fatwas were collected from the official website of Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah. The results show that the word al-Mar’ah is used to refer to the female entity as a single individual, emphasizing her essential nature, honor, biological maturity, and individual rights. Meanwhile, the term an-Nisaa' is used as a plural form that does not have a singular root (ismu jam'in min ghairi lafzhihi), which in Dar al-Ifta articles tends to represent women's social-collective roles, gender relations, societal fiqh laws, and their position within the family institution. This study demonstrates that the mufti's choice of diction in Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah is closely tied to semantic accuracy to avoid legal bias in contemporary fatwa texts.
