The Effectiveness of Video-Based Learning Media in Improving Elementary School Students' Understanding of Self-Esteem

Puberty education is an essential component of reproductive health education that should be introduced at the elementary school level. However, its implementation in schools remains limited because puberty is often regarded as a sensitive or taboo topic, despite being included in the national curriculum. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of video-based learning media in improving students' self-esteem in puberty education. A quasi-experimental approach employing a Nonequivalent Control Group Design was used. The study involved 38 sixth-grade students from SDN Singasari 03, comprising 19 students in the experimental group and 19 students in the control group. Data were collected through pretests and posttests using a self-esteem scale. The data were analyzed using normality and homogeneity tests, N-Gain analysis, and an independent-samples t-test at a significance level of 0.05. The findings revealed that the experimental group achieved an N-Gain score of 68.30%,, which was categorized as less effective, whereas the control group obtained an N-Gain score of 34.49%, categorized as moderately effective. Furthermore, the independent-samples t-test indicated a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.001). These findings suggest that the intervention produced different outcomes between the groups. However, the N-Gain results indicate that the control group demonstrated a greater improvement in self-esteem than the experimental group. Therefore, the conclusion should be interpreted with caution, as the reported statistical results do not support the claim that video-based learning media was more effective than the treatment implemented in the experimental group.
