Registers in Workplace Communication at Ranch Market Kemang: A Sociolinguistic Analysis

This study aims to analyze and identify the terms used in the retail industry by examining the types of register language and the meanings of register terms employed by workers at Ranch Market Kemang. To analyze the types of registers, the writer applies Joos’ (1968) theory of language registers. Meanwhile, to identify the meanings of the register terms, the writer uses Yule’s (2020) theory of meaning. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected through interviews and recordings of communication among workers at Ranch Market Kemang. The findings revealed 30 register terms that were analyzed using the selected theories. The analysis showed 25 instances of consultative registers, 3 instances of casual registers, and 2 instances of formal registers. Furthermore, the study identified 26 instances of referential meaning and 4 instances of associative meaning based on Yule’s theory. This study is expected to contribute to sociolinguistic research, particularly in the analysis of workplace communication and language variation in the retail industry.
