Abstract

Language plays an important role in communication within martial arts communities, particularly in the International Sport Kickboxing Association (ISKA) Indonesia, where accuracy and efficiency are essential. This study aims to identify the forms and functions of jargon used in ISKA Indonesia. The study applies Halligan’s (2004) theory to classify jargon forms into words, phrases, abbreviations, and acronyms. In analyzing the functions of jargon, the study uses Allan and Burridge’s (2006) theory, which explains that jargon functions as technical or specialist language for accurate, efficient, and economical communication, as well as a means of promoting in-group solidarity while distinguishing group members from outsiders. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained from the official referee and judge guideline book used by ISKA Indonesia and were analyzed based on the relevant theories. The findings revealed 33 jargon terms consisting of 11 words, 18 phrases, 2 abbreviations, and 2 acronyms. The analysis also showed that all identified jargon terms served two primary functions: facilitating precise and efficient communication among members and strengthening professional identity and solidarity within the organization. This study contributes to the field of sociolinguistics by expanding understanding of jargon use in sports communities, particularly in martial arts organizations. Furthermore, it is expected to improve public understanding of specialized language used in kickboxing and professional combat sports communication.
