Abstract

Optimizing the role of the family is a critical factor in the formation of children's character. This study aims to analyze strategies for optimizing the role of the family as the first and primary educational institution in shaping children's character through a values-based education approach. Using a literature study method, this study examines various sources such as journals, books, and scientific articles to investigate the concepts of character education, values-based education, and the mechanisms and obstacles of families in instilling values. The results of the analysis indicate that the family plays a role as the earliest and most influential environment in the internalization of basic values such as honesty, responsibility, empathy, discipline, and religiosity. Optimizing this role can be realized through several key strategies: (1) parental role modeling in daily behavior, (2) creating warm and dialogical communication, (3) implementing positive and consistent discipline, (4) habituating values through family routines and activities, and (5) synergy with the school and community environment to reinforce consistent value messages. This study concludes that values-based education in the family, optimized through parental commitment, awareness, and parenting skills, is an effective foundation for building strong children's character. The implication is that it is necessary to increase parental capacity through parenting education programs and policy support that facilitates the role of families in character education.
